The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest non-profit food bank in the Washington, D.C. area and a member of America's Second Harvest. In addition to serving the area with food, it also provides nutritional education to the local community.
The Capital Area Food Bank: - Annually distributes 45 million pounds of food, equivalent to 37.5 million meals - Of which, 17 million pounds are fresh fruit and vegetables - Serves nearly 500,000 people in the region struggling with hunger - Spends 92 cents of each dollar raised for food distribution, transportation and programs
Many of the food bank’s 500 partner agencies report they are seeing a tremendous increase in those seeking food assistance, from 30 to 100 percent. This increase is due to: job loss, the economy, high cost of housing, lack of health care and other issues. The CAFB’s motto is Together we can solve hunger.
